I’m a UFC fan. Not a die-hard fan like a few friends, but a fan nonetheless. When UFC 111 was announced I was excited to get to see GSP fight even if it is against a somewhat easy opponent. Unfortunately, we didn’t get to see any of the fights because Rogers was unable to deliver the UFC feed. Not just to me, but everywhere.

Restaurants surely lost thousands of dollars because of the screw up. I had one manager tell me that the Rogers representative they were on the phone with tried to deflect the blame onto the bar for not having a backup service provider. Unbelievable.

All I can hope for is that Rogers doesn’t fall apart when the NHL playoffs are on.

<shameless plug>
That, or TELUS TV magically appears in Ontario sometime soon.
</shameless plug>

Title Text: Some engineer out there has solved P=NP and it’s locked up in an electric eggbeater calibration routine. For every 0x5f375a86 we learn about, there are thousands we never see.

Its from XKCD.com. In these comics, the alternate text (aka title text… the text you see when you mouse-over the image) is just as important as the comic. I was curious why the author chose 0x5f375a86 so I googled it. Turns out its from this paper and shows how somebody coding for Quake came up with an incredible algorithm that sped things up by a factor of 4 without sacrificing the degree of accuracy needed.

Love it.

I had a list of these forwarded to me today and I found them true and entertaining enough to post some of my favourites here:

I don’t understand the purpose of the line, “I don’t need to drink to have fun.” Great, no one does. But why start a fire with flint and sticks when they’ve invented the lighter?

Have you ever been walking down the street and realized that you’re going in the complete opposite direction of where you are supposed to be going? But instead of just turning a 180 and walking back in the direction from which you came, you have to first do something like check your watch or phone or make a grand arm gesture and mutter to yourself to ensure that no one in the surrounding area thinks you’re crazy by randomly switching directions on the sidewalk.

Do you remember when you were a kid, playing Nintendo and it wouldn’t work? You take the cartridge out, blow in it and that would magically fix the problem. Every kid in America did that, but how did we all know how to fix the problem? There was no internet or message boards or FAQ’s. We just figured it out. Today’s kids are soft.

I would rather try to carry 10 plastic grocery bags in each hand than take 2 trips to bring my groceries in.

The only time I look forward to a red light is when I’m trying to finish a text.

A recent study has shown that playing beer pong contributes to the spread of mono and the flu. Yeah, if you suck at it.

Was learning cursive really necessary?

My brother’s Municipal League baseball team is named the Stepdads. Seeing as none of the guys on the team are actual stepdads, I inquired about the name. He explained, “Cuz we beat you, and you hate us.” Classy, bro.

Whenever someone says “I’m not book smart, but I’m street smart”, all I hear is “I’m not real smart, but I’m imaginary smart”.

How many times is it appropriate to say “What?” before you just nod and smile because you still didn’t hear what they said?

I love the sense of camaraderie when an entire line of cars teams up to prevent a dick from cutting in at the front. Stay strong, brothers!

What would happen if I hired two private investigators to follow each other?

While driving yesterday I saw a banana peel in the road and instinctively swerved to avoid it…thanks Mario Kart.

Obituaries would be a lot more interesting if they told you how the person died.

I find it hard to believe there are actually people who get in the shower first and THEN turn on the water.

I would like to officially coin the phrase ‘catching the swine flu’ to be used as a way to make fun of a friend for hooking up with an overweight woman. Example: “Dave caught the swine flu last night.”

Bad decisions make good stories

Can we all just agree to ignore whatever comes after DVDs? I don’t want to have to restart my collection.

There’s no worse feeling than that millisecond you’re sure you are going to die after leaning your chair back a little too far.

I’m always slightly terrified when I exit out of Word and it asks me if I want to save any changes to my ten page research paper that I swear I did not make any changes to.

I hate being the one with the remote in a room full of people watching TV. There’s so much pressure. ‘I love this show, but will they judge me if I keep it on? I bet everyone is wishing we weren’t watching this. It’s only a matter of time before they all get up and leave the room. Will we still be friends after this?’

For those who don’t know Dave, or only know of him, allow me to give you a quick background. Since high school Dave has worked more jobs in more fields than anyone I know. He’s also attended (if you can call it that) more university and college programs then anyone I know. So far, he’s done Forestry at Lakehead, Construction Management at George Brown, Architectural Technologies at Fanshawe, and has just recently enrolled in Journalism at Centennial.

Clearly Dave is a man of many talents and and many faces. Let’s meet them:

Now, with his recent enrollment into Journalism I decided (with Dave’s permission) to start a pool on when Dave drops out of his studies this time. The prize is a drink or two at the bar courtesy of me. Started on Facebook, I thought that I’d move the contest to a more open forum so other can enter too. Here is a summary of the contest and the picks so far. What’s yours?

Hey everyone,

If you haven’t heard, our good friend Mr. Nuttall is starting yet another first year program. This time its Journalism at Centennial.

In honour of more OSAP money being poured into the local pubs and Dave inevitably dropping out the first time anyone criticises his writing I’ve decided to start the first (possibly annual) “Dave the drop-out Pool”

Since we’re all broke, entry is free and the prize is a free drink (or two) at the bar once the competition ends.

All you need to do is reply here or find me on MSN/inperson/txt me and let me know what date you want. Each person can only pick one day and the person closest to the day Dave throws in the towel will win. If there’s a tie, I’ll buy you both a drink.

His classes start this coming September.

I will take October 3rd.

What’s your pick?

Here is a breakdown of the picks so far and their reasoning:
Ryan Price (Me) – October 3rd, First assignment back which leads to first criticism of Dave’s writing.

Julie Schleien – Nov 3rd, No reason

Alexander Graves – Nov 1st, No reason

Jeremy Ham – Sept 29th, “I say the 29th only because the urge to go hunting for white-tail will simply be too much and he will be forced to make one of the most monumental decisions in his life…. and I know he will make the right choice.”

Dustin Curry – Dave makes it all 3 years, “I support dave wholeheartedly until the end of his third year as well! kick ass bro!”

Dave Price – Oct. 9th, “I think he will tough it out until Thanksgiving…. that is breakup weekend after all! Oct 9th 2009 and he will be living with Ryan a month after that.”

Kiron Gonidis – Sept. 18th, “I think this time Dave will buckle down get all his books and supplies in order and actually make a good go of it. Unfortunately, after a week or so of classes, Dave will realize he does not need to learn from credible sources how to write, he knows more about writing than his professors could ever dream and he will withdraw the 18th of september in order to recieve a partial refund of his tuition. Dave’s nothing if not economical about his academic pursuits”

Charles Ng – Jan 2nd, “Dave will tough it out past the New Year when he makes a resolution to develop the successor to the Baconator. so…… January 2nd”

Maggie MacLellan – Dec. 4th, “I think Dave will make it until the end of first semester (early December). At this point, he begins to severely hate someone or something about the program and quits. This is then celebrated by the rest of us as we no longer have to listen to his drunken, angry ramblings.”

What’s your pick?

I know I’m a little late on the whole new year’s thing, but I started this post and never finished it. Being the geek I am, many are technology-based.

A few predictions for 2009 in a completely scatterbrained order:

Facebook Connect will gain a wide acceptance on mainstream sites as an easy alternative to registering for the specific site

Smart phones will become common. If you buy a new phone, it’ll be a smart phone. In particular, a Telus phone.

The mighy blue and white will make the playoffs. The Ottawa Senators will finish well out of the playoffs, but still won’t get Tavares.

The Leafs will drastically improve their goaltending situation.

The “coolness” of Apple will wear off drastically. Apple’s stock will drop because of it.

Google’s stock will break $500 again (at $299 at the time of this writing)

Both businesses and offices will be performing the majority of their day to day activities through web-based applications (ie: performed through a browser rather then a desktop application)

Google’s chrome browser will gain 5% market share. Firefox will cross the 35% market share mark. IE 8 will finally be standards compliant, but still clunky and unappealing to work with

I’ll win my fantasy hockey pool.

Stephen Harper will be ousted as Prime Minister.

Yahoo! will be sold to Microsoft

I’ll get through at least 2 of the nerd books I’ve got sitting on my desk as well as at least 3 other (likely business-related) books. Hey, that’s a lot for me.

Think I left something out? Prove it. Write it down.
