]]> It’s really incredible what kind of quality programs open source can create. Most people are aware of the well-known ones like Linux, Firefox, or Open Office. However, before you go and pay for your next piece of software I’d recommend making sure that something isn’t available for free first.

The Wikipedia Free Software Portal is a great resource. Sorted by category, you can quickly locate any open source software that might be able to do what you’re looking for.

There are some stunning graphic programs out there for anyone who hasn’t got their hands on a copy of Photoshop. Even those who own Photoshop might want to check out some of the freely offered programs. Many are suited to a niche of image editing (in particular, photo editing) and because of this the tools and user interface is rather handy.

Definitely a site to bookmark.
